The Engagement At The Bridge
On September 5, 1778, Lieutenant Jonathan Metcalf was mortally wounded defending this place with a one-gun detachment of a Massachusetts State Artillery Company against an advance force of the 4,000 strong British invaders. He is said to have been buried with full military honors, in the Acushnet Precinct Cemetery. The only American officer to have lost his life in The British invasion of New Bedford.
